Children’s literature, and more specifically reading, is an essential task that must be promoted in children’s lives. So far, we have already known many ways to encourage reading, however, today we show you a different way of approaching literature: through games.

Educating through play is one of the best means for children to develop their skills and abilities. More specifically, board games of the educational type have a fantastic double objective, both for adults and children: to teach and to entertain.

The success that board games have had for many years has made the variety and themes of these increasingly wide. For this reason, today we focus on educational board games that promote literature and reading in both young people and children.

The library game

Recommended for children between six and twelve years old, how could it be otherwise, as its name indicates, the game takes place in a library. The plot of the same begins when the sorcerer Pokokoko enchants a mouse so that it enters the library and devours all the books!

This spell must be broken by the participants of the game, who will only be able to achieve it by working as a team. The goal, then, is to  collect twelve pages of a secret storybook, compose it, and read it aloud.

A cooperative game that can also be played individually that will encourage the use of libraries and reading books in an extremely fun way.

Once upon a time , the narrative card game

Recommended for ages eight and up for three to six players to participate, this is a card game that will foster children’s creativity in a fascinating way.

The objective of this game is for the players, together, to create a story using the cards that are presented to them. Among these cards we can find typical game elements, such as fairies, princesses or forests, among others.

One of the players becomes the main narrator and must try to finish his story and get his ending, since, during the game, the other players will have to try to make his ending be the one used. A fantastic way to enhance the imagination of the little ones, as well as oral and public expression.

Storytelling , one of the educational board games that promote literature

Again, the creation of stories is once again the objective of this game. In this way, the little ones will become true professional storytellers, that is, storytellers.

Recommended for children from five years old and with the possibility of playing between two and four players, it uses a lot of visual perception and the location of images.

The game tiles include a series of sequences to narrate that, in addition, will have to be related to different images and locations that are also present on the table.

Manchuteka: we read while playing

This game, created from the Network of Public Libraries of Castilla-La Mancha, and which simulates the traditional game of the goose, is ideal for introducing children to literature and bringing them closer to having a first contact with books and libraries.

For this reason, recommended for children between three and seven years old, it is based on 25 children’s books that have been selected by the libraries of which we previously spoke. In this sense,  l different boxes as questions related to the selection of books just mentioned.

For all those who belong to the community of Castilla-La Mancha, this is a great initiative to encourage reading and the use of libraries. However, not everyone accesses them. Therefore, we propose that, from this game, and keeping it as a base, you create your own game with a selection of books from some of the libraries in your community that you can go to daily.

This will serve both as a craft to create the game, as well as to encourage reading and use of libraries in the little ones. There will be no better initiative than creating your own educational board game with your children!
