The National Identity Document or DNI is a document that proves the identity of a person. Your name, surname, place and date of birth, among other things, are indicated on it. All adults are required to have a DNI and to always carry it with them ; a law enforcement officer can petition anytime he is taught.
In the case of minors, this is not the case. Indeed, having a DNI is not mandatory before the age of 14, although it can be requested from three months of age.
However, although the law does not oblige a person under 14 years of age to have a DNI, it is convenient for children to have it in some cases. For example, when they are going to take a plane trip, otherwise, they will have to carry the family book to verify their identity and that of their parents.

How can a child get their ID?
Although the DNI is not a mandatory document until the age of 14, it is possible to request it from three months of age. To do so, their parents or legal guardians should approach the nearest National Police office. The minor must be present, as well as the people who exercise their parental authority.
Along with the application, you must present the literal birth certificate, a recent passport-size color photograph with a white background, and the applicant’s registration certificate. The family book and ID of the parents or legal guardians must also be presented.
If the interested party is under 14 years of age, the DNI is delivered in the presence of those who have parental authority. If you are 14 or older, you can pick it up yourself. The DNI is valid for five years if the holder has not reached 30 years of age.
Should a child have a tax identification number (NIF)?
The Tax Identification Number (NIF) of a person of Spanish nationality is the number of their DNI, followed by the verification code, which is the letter with which the DNI ends. In the case of foreigners residing in Spain, it is the foreigner’s identity number (NIE).
The NIF is a number that identifies a person in any procedure that has to do with a tax obligation. As there is a correlation between DNI and NIF, all adults have a NIF, but the same does not happen in the case of children. In effect, since there is no obligation for minors under 14 years of age to have a DNI, they often do not have a NIF either.
A child can have a provisional NIF, until he has his ID. There are mainly two reasons. The first is the contracting of a financial product in your name. It can be a savings account in which the family deposits small amounts on the occasion of the first communion or baptism gifts, or even birth.
The second reason has to do with the benefits or deductions to which a minor may be entitled. This can happen, for example, in the case of large families or children with some kind of disability. As the child is the direct beneficiary of these aid, it is essential that they have a NIF.
Why is it important for children to have a DNI and a NIF?
Whether to travel or to open a bank account for the future, it is important for children to have a DNI and a NIF. As a general rule, it is convenient to have all the family documentation in order at all times and not wait to need it to have to process it urgently.
During the holidays, for example, it can be very cumbersome to try to obtain the DNI, since it is a time when many people request it to travel. Therefore, although the DNI is not mandatory before the age of 14, it is best to request it as soon as it is possible to do so, that is, from three months of age.
