Are you going to the pediatric ward again for the baby’s cold? Do not be alarmed, with the arrival of the cold and frequent rains it is normal for your child to catch a cold or the flu. Therefore, preventing these possible diseases is a very effective way to avoid them.

Low temperatures, rainfall and changes in wind chill are known to threaten the health of children since their immune system is not yet developed and, therefore, they do not have the same defenses as an adult or even an older child.

With the arrival of the cold and the imminent rains, many parents wonder what they can do to prevent their children from suffering the typical diseases of the time. Therefore, below we share practical tips to avoid the baby’s cold.

Rain and baby cold

In the rainy season there is an increase in the number of respiratory problems such as pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media and bronchiolitis, which have greater complications in children.

This is because rain favors the circulation of respiratory viruses and pollutants in the air. As a consequence, the child may have temperatures above 39 degrees, reason enough to take the child to the emergency room, as well as if he has a fever for three days.

To avoid the baby’s cold, it is possible to take simple measures such as taking care of their diet, monitoring their health and covering them very well, especially when changing environments with different temperatures.

How to act in these cases?

As is known, viruses are spread through the air or by contact with contaminated objects. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the hygiene of the child’s toys, as well as to wash their hands frequently. Better yet, if the adults in charge do the same.

Now, if the baby’s cold symptoms have already appeared, pediatricians recommend as a first measure to provide plenty of fluids to cool the throat.

Regarding nasal congestion, it is advisable to apply a small saline solution or warm salt water to the nose for a quick and effective cleaning. Conversely, you should avoid giving them antibiotic cough syrups in order to cure the flu.

Tips to prevent your baby’s cold

  • Get him used to hygiene. To prevent a baby’s cold, it is important to take care of our hygiene and that of the child from an early age. Teach him to wipe his nose with clean tissues, preferably disposable ones. Hands should be washed with soap – if it is antiseptic, better – for 20 seconds in warm water to eliminate viruses.
  • Avoid shared items. It is preferable not to share glasses and meals served from the same place (potatoes, popcorn, etc.). Create individual bowls, especially if someone in the family has a cold, so germs don’t spread.
  • Parental care to prevent the baby’s cold. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and, if possible, teach your child to do the same. If you sleep with the child, keep a distance of 12 to 15 inches between heads to prevent the cold from spreading.
  • A good diet. Take care of the baby’s diet, since with the cold it spends more calories than in summer. A good diet will strengthen your defenses and help protect you from colds and other illnesses. If your baby is breastfeeding, breastfeeding will boost his immune system and protect him from many infections.

If you already eat solids, your diet should include fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C, as well as fish and milk. Replace cold drinks with broths, hot drinks, water and natural juices at room temperature.

    • Avoid contagion. If there is a cold in the family, it is better to avoid having contact with the little one. If coexistence is inevitable, a good measure is the use of masks and, of course, avoid sneezing or coughing in front of the child.
    • Protect it from the cold. To prevent the baby from catching a cold, when you go out for a walk you should be warm, but without exaggeration as it can be counterproductive since excess fabric prevents you from regulating your body temperature with that of the environment and ensuring adequate perspiration mechanisms.

In addition, the home heating should not be set too high, in order to avoid a contrast with the outside. It is essential to protect your nose and mouth when going from hot to cold environments, to face the phenomenon of thermal inversion with its significant reduction in temperature.

      • Ventilating the house prevents the baby’s cold. Do it frequently so that the viruses in the home go away. However, you should protect your child from drafts by staying with him in a room without opening windows or doors.
      • Avoid crowds. It is important to go with the child to little crowded spaces, avoiding going to shopping centers, the city center, shops, etc. Try not to expose your child to these places as it is a source of germs.
      • Sleep and exercises, pillars to avoid the baby’s cold. Exercise is recommended because it is usually beneficial for the child’s immune system. Playing and moving his body will make him much stronger.

Sleep hours are also very important to boost children’s defenses. That is, the better the little one sleeps, the better he will react to cold and flu viruses.

As you can see, there are endless practical tips that can help you avoid having the bad time of having your child sick in the rainy season. And what do you do to prevent your baby’s cold?
